Roma’s Nicola Zalewski has rejoined group training, much to the delight of new manager Ivan Juric. Calciomercato confirm that the winger completed a full training session with his teammates today, having only participated in athletic work last week. Zalewski is now aiming to be ready for Thursday’s Europa League match against Athletic Bilbao, which will mark Juric’s European debut with the club.
Zalewski had previously been excluded from the first team after a failed transfer to Galatasaray for €11 million, including bonuses and a future sell-on clause. The club’s dissatisfaction with his decision to stay led to his marginalization. Former coach Daniele De Rossi had suggested that Zalewski’s situation depended on contract extension talks, which are expected to resume in the coming days.
The handling of Zalewski’s case reportedly displeased the Friedkin ownership, contributing to CEO Lina Souloukou’s resignation yesterday.
Juric has expressed confidence in Zalewski since his arrival, stating in his first press conference, “The situation is being resolved appropriately, and I think he’s a player I like. He could be important for our development throughout the season.” The Croatian coach had previously shown interest in Zalewski during his time at Torino, and now has the opportunity to work with him at Roma’s training ground.
Juric is considering implementing a 3-4-3 formation, an idea he has been contemplating for days. He experimented with this setup last week, positioning Dybala on the right wing. Zalewski’s reintegration provides another option for the wide positions, with Juric noting, “We’re a bit short on that side,” during yesterday’s press conference. The Polish player offers versatility along with El Shaarawy, who can also play as a midfielder in a four-man midfield. The team is also awaiting the return of Saelemaekers, expected back in late November.
