Weston McKennie’s father: “He was in trouble but stayed afloat, he knew what he wanted”

Start

In an unexpected turn of events this summer, Weston McKennie has gonr from being surplus to requirements at Juventus to becoming a key part of the club’s project, complete with a contract renewal. The cherry on top came last Tuesday when he scored a goal in the Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, in his first start of the season.

McKennie, who was also selected for the big match against Napoli on Saturday, is experiencing a golden moment, perhaps unexpected even for him. Just a few months ago, he seemed destined to leave in search of fortune elsewhere, as there appeared to be no place for him in the Bianconeri squad. However, the American midfielder has proven himself ready for Thiago Motta’s plans, and satisfaction has not been slow in coming.

Speaking with IlBianconero about the change in situation, his father John McKennie, who shared some exclusive insights:

When asked about Weston’s surprising return to the center of Juventus’ project this summer, John McKennie said, “Sometimes you find yourself with your head underwater, and when that happens, it’s crucial to stay away from dangers. Weston has always had confidence in himself, a confidence that, combined with the awareness of what he wanted, gave him this important opportunity.”

Regarding Weston’s recent Champions League performance, his father shared, “He told me it was a great feeling to score in the first game of the season. Now, of course, he hopes to continue like this and score many more.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, John McKennie expressed, “I think Weston had a good season last year too, although there’s always room for improvement. Personally, I hope he shoots more when he has the chance.”

On how he supports his son, John explained, “This aspect has never changed since he started playing football. I listen to him every time we talk, I’m more interested in how he’s doing as my son than as a footballer. I ask him how things are going in terms of mental health, savings, personal life. From the beginning, I’ve always told him three things: work hard, have fun, and be respectful.”
