“We can’t draw a match where we score three goals” – Fonseca reflects on Milan’s 3-3 draw with Cagliari

AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca expressed his frustration after his team’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Cagliari in Serie A. Despite scoring three goals away from home, Milan was unable to secure the victory due to defensive lapses.

In his post-match interview, Fonseca identified the main issue as the team’s defensive performance rather than their attacking play. He stated, “I think Milan’s problem was not with the ball but defensively. We’re lacking aggression at the moment. It’s not possible to win a game where you allow so many crosses and lose all the aerial duels. We can’t draw a match where we score three goals here. Conceding three goals like this is a step backwards.”

The Portuguese coach emphasized that Milan always plays with a three-man midfield and that the problem in this match was not offensive. “The only problem of the team is how we suffered,” he explained. “We started the match by conceding a goal that we cannot allow.”

Fonseca also addressed individual performances, particularly that of Theo Hernandez, saying, “Theo can do better defensively. We are working to correct many things. I think everyone can improve.” He acknowledged the challenges faced by 16-year-old Francesco Camarda, who made his first Serie A start, adding, “It wasn’t easy for Camarda. He did well with what he did, and I am satisfied with his performance.”

Reflecting on the match’s dynamics, Fonseca remarked, “Honestly, the players prepare for these matches with more motivation. This is why I am more worried today about Cagliari than before the match against Real Madrid. When you play against teams like Real Madrid, there is space to play, but against Cagliari, we must have courage and control the game.”
