Valentin Carboni suffers ACL tear: Impact on Inter, Marseille, and player’s future

Start

Devastating news has emerged from Argentina regarding young striker Valentin Carboni, who is currently on loan from Inter Milan to Marseille. The 19-year-old, who was initially sidelined for Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia due to a knee problem, has now been diagnosed with a more severe injury than initially thought.

Calciomercato report how medical examinations have revealed that Carboni has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. This diagnosis comes as a significant blow to Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had high hopes for the young talent this season. The injury will force Carboni to be out of action for at least six months, potentially sidelining him for the remainder of the current campaign.

The situation is particularly complex given the terms of Carboni’s loan agreement between Inter Milan and Marseille. The deal, finalized during the summer transfer window, involves a paid loan of €1 million with an option for Marseille to buy the player for €36 million plus bonuses. Inter Milan, however, retained a buy-back clause set at €40 million.

This long-term injury complicates matters for Marseille, who will now have limited opportunity to evaluate Carboni’s on-field performance before making a decision on his permanent acquisition. The French club will need to carefully consider their options, given the substantial investment required to secure Carboni’s services permanently.

Inter Milan, on the other hand, maintains the right to exercise their buy-back option within 10 days should Marseille decide to trigger the €36 million purchase clause. If Marseille opts not to pursue a permanent deal, Carboni will return to Milan at the end of the season in June 2025.
