Francesco Totti, the legendary former Roma captain, has spoken candidly about the current situation at his beloved club in a recent interview with Il Messaggero (via Calciomercato). Totti expressed his concerns about the position Daniele De Rossi finds himself in as the new head coach of Roma.
“De Rossi is the lightning rod, and he’s the one who will suffer for it,” Totti stated. “Fortunately, he’s someone who knows everything and everyone. At this moment, he’s the only one who can be the coach at Roma.”
Totti drew parallels between De Rossi’s situation and that of his predecessor, José Mourinho. He explained, “If there’s a strong board that comes out in the open and speaks clearly about the objectives, then everything is fine. Instead, now if things don’t go well, all the blame would fall on Daniele. That’s what happened to Mourinho because José put his face to it.”
The Roma icon also addressed the recent controversy surrounding Paulo Dybala. “I’ve never spoken ill of Paulo,” Totti clarified. “I’ve always had respect and admiration for him. He’s Roma’s strongest player, so he needs to be protected. What happened recently was perhaps a misunderstanding or a miscommunication.”
