Tonali: “After the derby we understood that it was a different year”

Start

Following the Rossonerri’s successful start to this year’s campaign, Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali spoke about the impact of their 3-2 victory over Inter in the Derby della Madonnina had on their impressive run thus far.

Despite losing to Napoli, Pioli’s men have managed to attain seven wins and two losses within their first ten games of the Serie A, finding themselves within third and only trailing behind the league-leaders by three points.

Their fine run of form includes a victory over their cross-city rivals in five goal thriller as Milan managed to come-back after falling behind 1-0 after a fabulous solo effort by Marcelo Brozovic with clinical strikes from Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao.

In an interview with Italian news outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 22 year-old touched upon how defeating the Nerazzurri at the San Siro earlier on in the campaign ignited a spark for Milan in defending  their title:

After the derby we understood that it was a different year, that we were there for our own merits and that we didn’t have to waste any games anymore. At that point it was easier. For us players it was much easier, even though we knew we had to win them all. But when we were preparing for the matches during the week we realized how energized we were and therefore things were very simple on the pitch. “
