Theo Hernandez: “I’m very happy at Milan, they love me here”

Start

Theo Hernandez had a special night as AC Milan secured a 3-0 victory over Lecce. The French left-back not only provided an assist for Alvaro Morata’s opening goal but also scored a record-equaling goal himself, matching Paolo Maldini’s tally of 29 Serie A goals for Milan as a defender.

After the match, Hernandez spoke about his future at the club, hinting at a potential long-term stay. “I’m very happy here. The people and the team love me. That’s the most important thing,” he said in a post-match interview.

The 26-year-old’s goal came from a Rafael Leao assist, with a powerful left-footed strike that beat Lecce’s goalkeeper Falcone at the near post. This goal further cemented Hernandez’s place in Milan’s history books.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Hernandez commented, “It’s great. We weren’t good in the first few matches, but now we’re starting to work well, play well, and do what the coach tells us. We’re happy to have played a great game, which is the most important thing.”

When informed about equaling Maldini’s goal-scoring record, Hernandez expressed surprise and joy: “I didn’t know that. I’m happy to have scored so many goals for this club, and I hope to score many more.”

The French international’s current contract with Milan runs until June 30, 2026. While negotiations for a renewal have not yet begun in earnest, Hernandez’s positive comments about his time at the club suggest he may be open to extending his stay.

Milan’s management will likely need to address Hernandez’s reported desire for an annual salary of €8 million, a figure they are currently reluctant to meet. However, the player’s recent statements leave the door open for future discussions.
