The Athletic are the latest news outlet to report that David de Gea, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, is in talks to join Genoa. The 33-year-old Spanish international has been a free agent since departing Old Trafford last summer, unable to reach terms on a contract extension.
After more than a year away from competitive action, de Gea is reportedly in advanced talks with Genoa, with a free transfer looking increasingly likely. This potential move comes after the goalkeeper considered various options, including lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer in the United States.
De Gea’s illustrious career at Manchester United spanned 12 years, during which he made an impressive 545 appearances. His tenure saw him surpass Peter Schmeichel’s clean sheet record and become the club’s most-capped goalkeeper. Throughout his time in England, de Gea collected five major trophies, including the Premier League title in 2013 and the Europa League in 2017.
The Spanish keeper’s last competitive match was the 2023 FA Cup final against Manchester City, over 400 days ago. Despite his extensive experience at the highest level, including 45 caps for Spain, de Gea has not represented his national team since 2020.
Should the move materialize, it would mark a significant coup for Genoa, who are preparing for the upcoming Serie A season. The Italian club is set to kick off their campaign with a challenging fixture against defending champions Inter Milan on August 17th.
