Terim: ‘Milan can win the Scudetto, Fiorentina will grow in time’

Start

Fatih Terim, the legendary Turkish coach, recently shared his thoughts on Italian football, focusing on his former clubs Milan and Fiorentina. At 71, Terim’s passion for the game remains undiminished, and his eyes light up when discussing Italy with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I always miss your country and those wonderful years,” Terim admits, his voice slightly trembling with emotion.

Discussing the upcoming Milan-Fiorentina match, Terim recalls his unbeaten record against both teams as a manager. “Yes, it’s my match: I’ve never lost it, whether I was the coach of one or the other,” he says with pride.

When asked about his famous nickname (Emperor, ed.), Terim laughs, “The nickname has always pleased me because the fans gave it to me. But please, call me Fatih Terim.”

Regarding the current Serie A season, Terim acknowledges the competitive balance but points out the usual contenders for the title: “Inter, Juventus, Napoli, who are without European commitments and currently lead, and Milan, of course.”

Terim expresses admiration for Milan’s coach Paulo Fonseca: “I like him very much, both as a coach and as a person. You can see that he always wants to play modern, offensive football, which is also pleasing to watch. And he’s polite in his manners and words.”

On Milan’s performance, Terim notes, “I saw them play well in Leverkusen in the Champions League, showing great growth.” He also defends Rafael Leão, stating, “Talented players like Leão, who are good in one-on-one situations, should be judged differently from others and given freedom. I like Rafa; when he lights up, he always invents something.”

Turning to Fiorentina, Terim praises the club’s recent achievements and management: “In the last two years, Fiorentina have played three finals and inaugurated a fantastic structure like Viola Park. It’s not like nothing has been seen, eh.”

Terim expects an entertaining match between Milan and Fiorentina: “I expect to enjoy myself. They are two teams that try to control the game and attack.”

Finally, Terim comments on two Turkish players in Serie A: “I gave Calhanoglu his national team debut. He’s a unique player: he can do everything well. Kenan [Yildiz] is still young but has flair, and what has surprised me most is his hunger: at Juventus, he plays on the left, runs, and works hard for a talented boy. Good.”
