Tensions rise ahead of Rome Derby: Police Intervene to prevent violence

Start

As the highly anticipated Rome derby between Roma and Lazio kicks off, tensions are escalating in the capital. Authorities have taken proactive measures to ensure safety, particularly around key areas such as Piazzale Ponte Milvio and the River Bar along the Lungotevere.

Approximately 300 fans from both teams, masked and armed with offensive objects, attempted to clash. However, thanks to the swift intervention of law enforcement, including the use of water cannons, the situation was contained before any significant violence could occur.

Reports indicate that police seized several dangerous items intended for use in confrontations. These included knives, baseball bats, wooden clubs, and firecrackers—similar to those that caused injuries during the last derby held in the Coppa Italia.

Despite the heightened tensions, access to the stadium for fans preparing their displays proceeded relatively smoothly. However, one Lazio ultra, a twenty-year-old from Rome, was apprehended with a screwdriver and other offensive items. He has since been reported and banned from attending matches under a Daspo order. Additionally, an anti-Semitic banner was displayed by Roma supporters on the Tangenziale Est.

Security measures for this derby have been intensified, particularly as it marks a return to night matches after six years. The Stadio Olimpico is set to be heavily guarded, with 1,200 officers deployed from early morning to maintain order.
