Spalletti: “The players are enthusiastic to the Azzurri jersey with pride”

Italy’s national team coach Luciano Spalletti addressed the media ahead of the upcoming Nations League matches against Belgium and Israel. The Azzurri are looking to build on their recent victories against France and Israel as they prepare for these crucial fixtures.

Spalletti began the press conference by emphasizing the players’ enthusiasm: “The players are excited to be here. I’ve seen the same spirit from the previous international break, with the joy of wearing this jersey. For me, the national team is a permanent emotion, and it seems the same for the players. I found them happy, and that makes a difference. We must also trust the players; it’s pointless to force them if they’re unwell.”

Addressing the issue of injuries, Spalletti commented: “Inter, Juventus, and Milan have players available to play multiple matches, but the quality level drops below that. It seems all teams go man-to-man and then retreat. In my opinion, we don’t play much; we need the courage to play everyone, developing those considered reserves.”

On the call-ups of Pisilli and Maldini, Spalletti explained: “We lack players with technical purity, and Daniel Maldini has pace, physicality, and good plays. He knows how to play very well, even if he sometimes loses focus. I’ve seen significant growth in him; let’s see how this week with us affects him. Pisilli? He seems like a really good midfielder. De Rossi told me when he coached him that he always scores in practice matches. He has frequency, energy, and deserves to be here with us.”

Regarding the absence of certain wingers, Spalletti clarified: “Chiesa played as a second striker in Allegri’s Juventus. He needs to understand certain things, but he can do it. Now Gasperini is playing Zaniolo as a second striker. It’s enough to see that they enjoy being inside and aren’t afraid to feel the defender behind them. There are several who are eligible for call-up, especially since this time there are only 23 spots. I preferred to call up 3 fewer to avoid leaving many out.”

On other selections, Spalletti added: “Gabbia has shown he can command the defensive line. He’s very attentive and intense, maintains a high line, often talks with teammates. We’re pleased to have called him up, and it’s nice to have a Milan player given there aren’t many Italians in the club. Gatti had an issue and needed to recover, so we decided to call up healthy players. To do well, perhaps we should have a few more offensive players.”
