Luciano Spalletti confirmed that Napoli have exercised their option to extend his contract by one year but reportedly did not appreciate the decision. The Partenopei boss guided the club to their first Serie A title in 33 years and it was widely reported that, despite having a contract ending in June 2023, the club would use their option to extend his deal by one year.
Reports suggested that despite having the option in his contract, Spalletti was keen to meet with the club to make plans for the next season before reaching a decision on his own future. Speaking after Napoli’s title win, the coach confirmed the news when talking with DAZN (as quoted by Sky Sport), but didn’t seem to be happy about the news:
“There is no problem. They had this option, they exercised it, I thank them for warning me that they exercised it, and then there will be time, as the season has not ended yet.
“I just replied like that because the journalists asked me things that were not down to them.”
