Italy national team manager Luciano Spalletti has expressed his openness to Federico Chiesa returning to Italian football. In a recent interview with Vivo Azzurro TV, the FIGC’s OTT platform, Spalletti discussed several players in the Azzurri orbit, including the Liverpool forward.
When asked about players he’d like to see back in the national team setup, Spalletti mentioned Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, praising his technical qualities and set-piece abilities. He then turned his attention to Chiesa, stating, “We’re hoping that Chiesa can play with more continuity and that we can see him train and play regularly.”
Regarding the possibility of Chiesa returning to Italy from Liverpool, Spalletti was enthusiastic: “Yes, I would be very much in favor of having Chiesa under our watch in terms of the level of our football, to reintegrate him because those who have this quality of looking you in the eye and breaking the line in front of them to get to the next one… There aren’t many of them.”
The Italy coach also mentioned other players on his radar, including Orsolini and Politano, emphasizing that they are all being closely monitored as potential contributors to the national team.
Spalletti didn’t forget to mention Zaniolo and Daniel Maldini, the latter of whom he praised for a beautiful goal against Fiorentina, noting that these are the kind of plays that can be crucial in important matches.
Lastly, the coach commented on Juventus player Andrea Cambiaso, describing him as a modern footballer. “The ideal player for me is one who uses his talent to serve those who have less and raise the level of everyone in the team,” Spalletti explained. He expressed happiness at the compliments Cambiaso received from Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, adding that he wasn’t surprised given the player’s high level of performance.
