Former AC Milan striker and current president of the Ukrainian Football Association, Andriy Shevchenko,  was recently honored with an induction into the Italian Football Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Coverciano. Following the award presentation, he shared his thoughts on various topics, including his deep connection to Serie A, the importance of football in society, and the future of AC Milan, particularly regarding star player Rafael Leão.

Reflecting on receiving the prestigious award, Shevchenko expressed his gratitude: “For me, it is a great honor. In my letter, I tried to describe the love I feel for Serie A and for Milan. The years I spent here in Italy were undoubtedly the best of my career, and the relationship I built with the people remains strong and even more powerful today.” He also took a moment to thank those who have supported Ukraine during its challenging times.

Shevchenko emphasized football’s significant role beyond just a sport, stating, “Football has immense value because it truly serves as a bridge for peace and relationships. It is therapy, especially for children.” He recounted an initiative that brought Ukrainian children to Coverciano, where he witnessed their joy: “I spoke with them, and they were incredibly happy. It had been a long time since I felt such happiness in children. Just two weeks of tranquility in Italy provided them with a great gift.”

Turning his attention to AC Milan, Shevchenko acknowledged the expectations surrounding the club. “I won’t delve into technical aspects, but Milan fans expect results. The match against Real Madrid was fantastic, but Milan needs more consistency. Only then can strong teams be created that can compete for the Scudetto.”

On the topic of young talents in Italian football, he noted the significance of having two Italian strikers competing for the top scorer title after a decade-long absence. “I like both players; having two strong forwards like them is beneficial for the national team.”

Shevchenko specifically addressed Rafael Leão’s potential and responsibilities within the team. “A player like Leão must be well protected; he is an asset for the team. However, Leão should also step up and perhaps do more for the squad. A champion is not just someone who makes important contributions in attack but also a leader—someone who helps the team during difficult moments. He has the potential to become that leader; now he needs to demonstrate it.”
