Venezia clinched a crucial 2-1 victory against Cagliari, marking their first win since October 30. The match, held at the Pier Luigi Penzo stadium, saw Francesco Zampano and Luka Sverko score the goals that propelled the home team to a much-needed three points.
The game started slowly, with Cagliari enjoying more possession but failing to create significant threats. Their best chance came from a header by Mina, which was expertly saved by Venezia’s goalkeeper, Stankovic. As the first half progressed, Zampano broke the deadlock in the 39th minute after a brilliant run by Gaetano Oristanio down the left flank. Francesco Zampano’s precise finish put Venezia ahead just before halftime.
The second half began with Venezia looking to extend their lead. They came close several times through Joel Pohjanpalo, Jay Idzes, and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia. In response, Cagliari’s coach Nicola made tactical changes, bringing on Gianluca Lapadula to partner with Roberto Piccoli in attack. However, Venezia continued to dominate play, with Stankovic making key saves to keep his team in front.
Venezia had a goal from Oristanio ruled out for offside before Sverko scored a stunning individual goal to double their lead. Cagliari fought back when Pavoletti headed in from a cross by Augello in the 76th minute, narrowing the deficit and reigniting hopes for an equalizer.
Despite Cagliari’s late push for a draw, which included attempts from Zappa and Lapadula being thwarted by Stankovic’s excellent goalkeeping, they could not find the back of the net. The match ended with Venezia celebrating a vital win that brings them within one point of Cagliari in the standings.
This victory is a significant boost for Venezia as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone while Cagliari faces their third consecutive defeat.
