Serie A | Monza 0-1 Genoa: Match Report

Start

Genoa’s remarkable start to the Serie A season continued as they secured a 1-0 away victory against Monza, thanks to a debut goal from new signing Andrea Pinamonti. This win follows their impressive 2-2 draw against reigning champions Inter in the opening match of the campaign.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating chances throughout. Daniel Maldini showcased his skill with a clever nutmeg on Milan Badelj, but Genoa’s defense managed to clear the danger. Junior Messias and Maldini both had opportunities for Monza, but failed to convert.

The turning point came in first-half stoppage time when Monza thought they had taken the lead. However, their celebrations were cut short as the goal was disallowed due to an offside call on Andrea Petagna. Moments later, Genoa capitalized on this reprieve when Pinamonti headed home a cross from Stefano Sabelli to give the visitors the lead.

The second half saw both teams pushing for goals. Petagna came close for Monza, while Genoa nearly doubled their lead through Morten Thorsby, who squandered a golden opportunity. Monza’s best chance for an equalizer came when Gianluca Caprari’s cross struck the inside of the post before bouncing into the arms of Genoa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Despite late efforts from Georgios Kyriakopoulos and Samuele Vignato, Monza couldn’t find a way through Genoa’s resolute defense. The victory marks a perfect debut for Pinamonti and continues Genoa’s impressive start to the season, building on their strong performance against Inter.
