Serie A | Genoa 2-0 Monza: Match Report

Start

Genoa secured a crucial 2-0 victory against Monza at Luigi Ferraris Stadium, pushing the visitors deeper into relegation trouble and consolidating their own mid-table status in Serie A.

Despite challenging weather conditions with heavy rain in the Liguria region threatening to postpone the match, the game proceeded on a muddy pitch. The encounter was marked by dramatic moments, including a missed penalty by Andrea Pinamonti and two decisive goals from defenders Koni De Winter and Johan Vasquez.

The match began with intense pressure from Genoa. Georgios Kyriakopoulos narrowly missed with a deflected angled drive, while Pinamonti’s header was expertly saved by Monza goalkeeper Stefano Turati. A penalty opportunity arose when Kyriakopoulos fouled Johan Vasquez, but Pinamonti’s spot-kick was dramatically saved by Turati.

Genoa’s persistence paid off in the second half. Aaron Martin’s precisely whipped free kick found Koni De Winter completely unmarked, who nodded in from close range to break the deadlock. Shortly after, new signing Maxwel Cornet delivered a cross that Johan Vasquez headed home, effectively sealing Monza’s fate.

Maxwel Cornet made an immediate impact as a substitute, providing the crucial assist for Vasquez’s goal. Turati made several impressive saves to prevent an even more comprehensive defeat for Monza.

The victory lifts Genoa to a comfortable mid-table position, while Monza remains rooted to the bottom of the Serie A table. The win provides significant breathing room for Genoa and increases the pressure on Monza in their battle against relegation.
