AC Milan secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Empoli in a match marked by controversial refereeing decisions that saw both teams reduced to 10 men. Rafael Leao and Serie A debutant Santiago Gimenez were the heroes for the Rossoneri, each finding the back of the net to secure all three points.
The match began with Milan’s new signings making their presence felt, as Joao Felix earned his first start in a 4-4-2 formation. The Portuguese star showcased his skill early on with some clever flicks, but also received a booking for simulation.
Empoli had their chances, with former Milan youth product Lorenzo Colombo coming closest when his strike hit the inside of the post. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the second half when Fikayo Tomori was sent off for a second yellow card after bringing down Colombo, despite the Empoli player being in an offside position.
The numerical advantage didn’t last long for Empoli, as Luca Marianucci was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for kicking Gimenez in retaliation to a push.
With both teams down to 10 men, Milan found their breakthrough. Christian Pulisic provided a pinpoint cross for Leao to head home at the far post. The Rossoneri then doubled their lead through Gimenez, who marked his Serie A debut with a well-taken goal, cutting inside and curling a left-footed shot into the net.
Despite late efforts from Empoli to get back into the game, including a close attempt by Ismael Konate, Milan held firm to secure the win. The victory keeps the Rossoneri in the hunt for Champions League qualification and provides a boost ahead of their upcoming European fixture against Feyenoord.
