Serie A clubs made to sign anti Super League promise

Start

Serie A clubs will be required to sign an ‘anti-Superleague’ commitment by June 2024 in order to take part in the new campaign. The potential for a new Super League project to get underway has once again reared its head following a ruling from the European Court of Justice that UEFA/FIFA acted against competition law by blocking the competition.

Football finance website Calcio e Finanza now report that last week, at the Federal Council meeting, the Italian Football Federation unanimously approved the new system of National Licences 2024-2025. From the document, consulted by Calcio e Finanza, emerges the date by which clubs must file their application for admission to the next edition of Serie A, together with the commitment not to take part in competitions other than those organised by FIFA, UEFA and FIGC.

The declaration is, in essence, an anti-Superleague clause, the approval of which dates back to 2021, at the time of the first attempt to launch the new project, and which takes on relevance now that the idea has been revived following the ruling of the EU Court.

Calcio e Finanza write that:

‘nevertheless, it seems decidedly complicated at the moment to imagine that new tournaments could start as early as next season. As stated in the official text of the document, ‘clubs must, by the peremptory deadline of 4 June 2024, comply with the following fulfilment:

“file with the Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A, also by certified e-mail, the application for admission to the 2024/2025 Serie A Championship, containing the request for the granting of the National Licence and the commitment not to participate in competitions organised by private associations not recognised by FIFA, UEFA and the FIGC”.

“The non-observance of the peremptory deadline of 4 June 2024, even with reference to only one of the fulfilments provided for in paragraphs I), II), III), V) and VI) above for participation in the relevant Professional Championship, determines the non-granting of the 2024/2025 National Licence,” the document concludes.
