Serie A | Cagliari 1-2 Lazio: Match Report

Start

Lazio bounced back from recent setbacks to claim a crucial 2-1 win over Cagliari at the Unipol Domus on Monday night. The victory propelled the Biancocelesti into fourth place in Serie A, showcasing their resilience after consecutive losses to Fiorentina and SC Braga.

The match began with both sides creating early opportunities. Cagliari’s Nicolas Viola tested Ivan Provedel with a long-range effort, while Roberto Piccoli narrowly missed connecting with a dangerous cross.

Lazio thought they had taken the lead when a series of deflections resulted in the ball finding the net, but VAR intervened to disallow the goal for handball.

The deadlock was finally broken just before halftime. Elseid Hysaj’s cross found Mattia Zaccagni, who expertly finished from close range to give Lazio the advantage.

Cagliari responded strongly after the break, with Piccoli equalizing from a corner with a powerful header. However, Lazio’s protests about potential interference in the build-up went unheeded.

The visitors quickly regained their lead through Taty Castellanos, who capitalized on Boulaye Dia’s assist to score from close range.

As the match progressed, both teams had chances to alter the scoreline. Lazio’s Gustav Isaksen and Zaccagni came close to extending the lead, while Cagliari mounted pressure in the closing stages.

Despite late efforts from Alessandro Deiola and Leonardo Pavoletti, Lazio held firm to secure all three points, demonstrating their ability to overcome fatigue from their midweek Europa League exertions.

The result leaves Cagliari in a precarious position near the relegation zone, while Lazio’s Champions League aspirations receive a significant boost.
