The Champions League legend Clarence Seedorf shared his thoughts on the new format and top contenders for this season’s competition in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’m curious about the new format. I liked the previous one, as the anticipation for big matches was part of the spectacle. But let’s give the new format time to show how it works,” Seedorf said.

When asked about the favorites, he stated: “History tells us that Real Madrid is the team to beat, but many can compete. The gap has narrowed and there are no easy matches – that’s the beauty of it.”

Seedorf believes Carlo Ancelotti will find the right balance at Real Madrid, even with the potential addition of Mbappé. He also praised Guardiola’s attention to detail at Manchester City and noted PSG’s competitive squad despite Mbappé’s likely departure.

Regarding Italian teams, Seedorf expects big things: “Inter, Milan and Juventus have the duty and the squads to qualify directly for the second phase. Atalanta will have tough matches but can aim high. Bologna can treasure this experience and enjoy it.”

He provided insights on each Italian contender:

“Inter has a complete squad and an established group. Consistency will be key to leveraging their deep roster. Milan needs to find balance – their journey will depend on when they achieve it. Juventus made important signings. If the new players integrate quickly and meet expectations, they could have a great run, though it may take time.”

On individual players, Seedorf praised Lautaro Martinez as one of the best strikers but emphasized that “even the greatest attackers haven’t won the Champions League alone.” He believes Rafael Leão “is the master of his own destiny” with the talent to become one of the best.

Seedorf approves of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s new role at Milan, saying he likes seeing “intelligent ex-players with skills in positions to support clubs.”

The Dutch legend concluded by sharing his perspective on luck in the Champions League: “We are the architects of our own luck. By multiplying how much one believes by how much effort and work one puts in, you get luck. Luck is a skill. You have to go looking for luck because in a competition where everyone is equipped to win, no one gives anything away.”
