Maurizio Sarri believes Juve’s 3-0 win over Lazio was a flattering score line and also revealed he won’t be watching the World Cup. The Biancocelesti held firm for 40 minutes before conceding and then shipped two more goals right after half-time. Speaking to DAZN after the match, Sarri offered his own assessment of the match:
For 40 minutes we had done well without taking risks and never letting Juventus control the game. Kean’s goal was a turning point, because then it was difficult to go and attack a team that sits deep in the last 30 meters when you are without an attacking point of reference. The result was a bit too harsh. The responsibility is ours, because we also conceded the second goal in a trivial way.
The line was perhaps a little wide on the first goal, but if you lose balls in that area of the field it is clear that the defensive line is in trouble. On long throws we never suffered except when we lost the ball in our own half of the pitch. The feeling, not having reviewed the goals, is that in the first goal we were a little too wide.
Juve took refuge after the lead, even before they did that, but I expected them to play like that. The doubts I had were about the attacking pair. I knew they would have this attitude, all the more so if they took the lead, and they did.
To me, as a mentality, I don’t like having multiple game plans, I want one that works and carry it through to the end. Then there is the management of the game. The balance is good because we are in the Champions League places. It’s clear that for us when we are missing important players the situation gets complicated.
Clearly, then we must not be satisfied. We still have room for growth. You can’t lose a game like that, after 41 minutes where the opponents didn’t create any danger and you concede a goal because of your own mistakes.
The break is good for everyone, because we all arrived short of physical and mental energy. This is the madness of this year’s calendar. I think I won’t even watch the World Cup given how angry the calendar makes me for this very World Cup.”
January window? Seeing Lazio’s previous windows in January, I don’t expect anything since little or nothing has been done in the past. Historically, Lazio moves little in January.”
