Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has expressed optimism about the potential sale of the San Siro stadium to Inter and AC Milan, following the clubs’ recent expression of interest in developing the area. Speaking at an event at Palazzo Marino, Sala stated, “I hope this is the time the project materializes. We will show the teams the values from the Revenue Agency and see what can be done. This is clearly the last chance.”
Sala outlined an ambitious timeline for the process, saying, “The goal, if the teams confirm, is to reach a complete conclusion before next year’s holidays. So, formally, with the sale of the stadium and the areas before next year’s holidays.” He refrained from disclosing the value of the areas and stadium proposed by the Revenue Agency, rumored to be around 200 million euros, preferring to discuss this with the clubs first.
The mayor highlighted the significance of this development, noting, “It’s a big change because we’re moving from the idea of surface rights to outright purchase, which I’d say is better for the municipality and for the people of Milan. This way, we can collect funds that we can reinvest. I think they will be directly channeled into public housing and trying to do something for the neighborhood that needs it so much.”
Sala also mentioned that meetings are already scheduled for today, adding, “We’re taking into account the work already done, the public debate, and the work done by the City Council that gave directions to the executive.”
This move represents a crucial juncture in the long-standing saga of San Siro’s future, with Sala framing it as potentially the final opportunity for Inter and Milan to secure their iconic home stadium. The shift from leasing to outright ownership could mark a new chapter in the relationship between the clubs and their historic venue, while also promising significant benefits for the local community through reinvestment of the sale proceeds.
