Former coaching legend Arrigo Sacchi shared his thoughts on the tight Serie A title race with Gazzetta dello Sport, emphasizing that Atalanta should not be counted out despite trailing the leaders. With just one point separating Napoli and Inter Milan at the top of the table, Sacchi offered his insights on the thrilling battle for the Scudetto.
“It’s true that Gasperini’s team is a few points behind, but in my opinion, they have the potential to get back into it and have their say. I don’t see Bergamo already out of the race,” Sacchi stated, keeping Atalanta in the conversation.
Commenting on Inter’s response to their recent defeat in Florence, Sacchi praised the team’s maturity: “A display of experience, strength, and great professionalism. Inter has grown tremendously, now they know how to manage difficult moments, which is a significant advantage in a long duel.”
The former AC Milan coach acknowledged Inter’s squad depth and quality, highlighting Simone Inzaghi’s work in developing the team. “When I watch Inter, I notice that everyone knows what they need to do. They have the game plan imprinted in their minds and rarely forget it,” Sacchi observed.
Regarding Napoli’s recent draw against Udinese, Sacchi was impressed by the team’s effort: “Conte’s boys finished with their tongues hanging out, they were exhausted. The draw is understandable, especially against a very physical team like Udinese.” He praised Antonio Conte’s work at Napoli, calling it “a kind of masterpiece in a city that is in love with football and beauty.”
When asked about Napoli’s decision not to replace the injured Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, Sacchi drew a parallel to his own experience: “I always remember that my Milan won the Scudetto when Van Basten played very few games due to injury. It’s not the individual that determines success, but the group. And Conte, in Naples, in a very short time, has managed to build a cohesive group where everyone sacrifices and fights for a single goal.”
Sacchi also pointed out the potential advantage Napoli has in not participating in European competitions: “I think it can help in the Scudetto race because there’s the possibility of training regularly during the week, no long trips to face, no wasting of physical and nervous energy, and above all, injuries can be avoided.”
In conclusion, Sacchi expressed his excitement for the title race: “I can’t say who might be favored. I want to savor it all, pedal stroke by pedal stroke. I think March will be the decisive month.”
