Italian journalist Sandro Sabatini was critical of Juventus’ 2-1 win over Como, also pointing out that Dusan Vlahovic didn’t feature at all in the game. The Serbian striker looks to have been usurped by Randal Kolo Muani in the pecking order, with the Frenchman scoring a brace to secure a vital three points in yesterday’s match. Writing for Calciomercato, Sabatini offered a tough assessment of the Bianconeri’s victory:
There was little beauty to behold in Juventus’ performance at Como, but as the old Juventus saying goes, “winning is the only thing that matters.” In reality, there are different ways to win, and the Bianconeri didn’t exactly choose the most empathetic approach for their fans, whether in the stadium or watching on TV.
Individual player ratings showed few standout performances. Di Gregorio was certainly heroic once per half. Among the back four, Gatti suffered the least and deserves credit for winning the decisive penalty. Veiga and Weah had mixed performances. It was a dark night for Savona, who was tormented by Strefezza and replaced in the second half by debutant Kelly (who was difficult to judge). In midfield, the usual Locatelli and Koopmeiners: the Dutchman embarrassed himself and his teammates, but not Thiago Motta, who continues to place blind faith in him. McKennie tried to change gears with some dynamic plays, but could do little. Nico Gonzalez and Yildiz played well until the final touch. Kolo Muani did two things, but did them exceptionally well: a goal from individual action in the first half and a penalty conversion in the second half. The initial impression is confirmed: he’s the only “Juve-worthy” player among the new signings.
The Bianconeri’s play didn’t break free from tedium even when, after an hour, Motta made changes in midfield: Locatelli and Koopmeiners out, Thuram and Douglas Luiz in. The other substitutes were barely noticeable. Vlahovic wasn’t seen at all, and he did well to go to the locker room before the 90th minute, only to reappear to embrace Kolo Muani. Perhaps the Serbian gained time for a shower, even though he hadn’t even sweated during the warm-up on the sidelines. Thiago Motta left him sitting, without even a glance in his direction.
