Runjaic: “Ekkelenkamp is growing, but he can be even more decisive”

Start

Ahead of the upcoming match against Verona, Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic held a press conference where he discussed various topics, including the team’s performance and potential market movements. “Do I expect anything? Let’s finish the first half of the season first, then we will analyze the numbers, data, and positions on the field based on different formations. We want to develop an analysis of our objectives and will reflect on what we need for the future. No team in the world remains stagnant; everyone is thinking about reinforcements based on their standings,” he stated.

Runjaic addressed questions regarding Alexis Sánchez’s playing time, suggesting that it might increase in future matches. “Perhaps yes. These are questions all coaches reflect on; it depends on the players who take the field and the strategy we want to implement during the game. We know Alexis has just returned, and we have Thauvin in great form and Lucca as well. One might wonder why Sánchez isn’t playing, but many factors need to align. After matches, we always learn something more; decisions are made based on general reflections during the week.”

The coach also commented on the performance of midfielder Ekkelenkamp, noting his growth while also acknowledging the return of Payero from injury. “We are reflecting on this; I am happy to have Payero back available as he was performing well before his injury. He provides us with stability and could play tomorrow. However, he may not yet be ready for a full 90 minutes. Ekkelenkamp is growing but can be even more decisive; he can score more.”

Runjaic emphasized that having multiple options is beneficial for the team. “We have players like Payero, Lovric, and Atta available. Karlstrom has been performing consistently but still needs to improve in certain areas. Zarraga requires a bit more time to return. Ekkelenkamp has played often in recent weeks and has sometimes gone beyond his limits; that doesn’t mean he won’t play tomorrow, but currently, with Payero and Atta available, we have two fresh players.”
