Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, former Inter Milan star and current Bayern Munich board member, shared his thoughts on Inter’s prospects and recent developments. The German football legend expressed his enduring affection for the Nerazzurri in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, stating, “Inter is never forgotten, like all things you carry in your heart.”
Reflecting on Inter’s season opener, Rummenigge downplayed concerns about the draw, emphasizing the team’s strength and consistency. He highlighted the emotional significance of Inter’s recent success, noting, “I know well what it means to have finished ahead of Milan, deservedly I might add…”
Rummenigge praised the new ownership under Oaktree, but singled out Giuseppe Marotta as the club’s most crucial asset. “Beppe is the guarantee of this era: just think of the team he has created with his collaborators, how he manages the company. And how much Juventus has gone down without him,” he remarked.
On Inter’s current squad, Rummenigge drew parallels between himself and Lautaro Martinez, praising the Argentine’s leadership qualities. He also commended Marcus Thuram’s development, stating, “After an excellent season, he seems to have grown even more: he scores, he assists, and he combines perfectly with Lautaro.”
The former striker expressed optimism about young German defender Yann Bisseck, noting Inter’s talent for spotting promising players. He also praised Hakan Calhanoglu’s development into a top-level player.
Regarding Simone Inzaghi, Rummenigge believes the coach has proven himself at the European level, citing Inter’s recent domestic and Champions League performances.
Rummenigge concluded by discussing the competitiveness of Italian and German football compared to the Premier League, and advocated for a salary cap in football to address escalating costs.
