Start

Tomas Rincon, affectionately known as “El General,” shared his insights ahead of the highly anticipated Turin derby. Having spent four and a half seasons with Torino and a brief period at Juventus, Rincon understands the significance of this historic match, as he explained to Gazzetta dello Sport. Currently playing for Santos, the Venezuelan midfielder reflected on his time in Turin and the challenges facing his former club.

Rincon described the derby as “always a special match, full of history,” adding that it was an honor to have played it so many times in a city where he spent five wonderful years. He emphasized the emotional weight of the game, saying, “For me, it’s a match that brings back many memories.”

As the match approaches, the role of the fans cannot be understated. Rincon stated, “The granata supporters will be crucial for us to try to win. It’s important to create an environment that pushes players even further.” He expressed hope that Torino could bring joy to their fans with a strong performance.

When asked about standout players in the current squad, Rincon highlighted Samuele Ricci. “I followed him when he was at Empoli,” he said. “Torino made a great deal in signing him. He’s a player who is constantly growing, has personality, and knows how to read the game. In my opinion, he is Torino’s most precious jewel right now.”

Reflecting on Ivan Vanoli’s management, Rincon noted, “I believe he is doing a good job. Torino started excellently but then experienced a dip in form. It’s essential to remember that when starting a new cycle, time is needed to achieve results.”

Rincon also touched on Antonio Sanabria’s performance this season. Despite Sanabria’s struggles with just two goals so far, Rincon remained optimistic: “Tonny is an excellent striker with qualities that allow the team to play better. It’s true he hasn’t had the same continuity as with the national team, but he remains a fundamental piece for us. For goals, we just need patience.”

Looking back at his time with Torino, Rincon fondly recalled the 2018-19 season under Walter Mazzarri as his best experience: “We finished seventh with 63 points and were in contention for Champions League qualification until the last three matches.” He emphasized that his entire time at Torino was gratifying and that he always identified with the club.

When reminiscing about Turin itself, Rincon said, “It’s a place I will always be connected to because my daughter was born there.” He praised the city’s elegance and respectfulness, stating that he and his family enjoyed their life there immensely.

Now at Santos after over ten years in Europe, Rincon feels fulfilled with his decision to change teams: “Everything is going well; it was right to change after so long.” He expressed excitement about this new chapter in his career.

Looking towards his future post-retirement from playing, Rincon confirmed his intention to stay involved in football: “I will definitely take the course to become a sporting director at Coverciano.” He also expressed interest in potentially having a role with the Venezuelan national team.

Finally, reflecting on Gian Piero Gasperini’s impact on his career during their time together at Genoa, Rincon said, “I have great admiration for him; he changed my life.” He recognized Gasperini’s ability to elevate teams and expressed pride in seeing him lead Atalanta to success, including their Europa League victory. “He finally received what he deserves,” Rincon concluded.
