Retegui: ‘Joining Genoa was also because of the Azzurri’

Start

Mateo Retegui admits that playing for the national team played a part in his decision to join Genoa this summer. The former Tigre striker is travelling to Italy today to complete his move to the Rossoblu, and speaking with ESPN, he explained why this move meant so much to him, and how he spoke with Genoa and Inter legend Diego Milito before making the switch:

“I’m really happy with what’s happening. I’ve been dreaming of playing in Europe since I was a kid.

“I’m happy, but also a bit sad about the situation of Tigre but I’ll always be grateful for what they did for me.

“I made this decision with my family and we think it’s the best choice. I’m joining a big club and I am happy. I want to enjoy my time there and learn. I have a great desire to win.

“The Azzurri? Of course, the decision had to do with the national team too.

“I’ll play for an Italian club, I’ll be closer and do my best to improve, hoping to be called the next time, I am always available.

“Diego Milito? It had an impact too. The family has been in touch with Diego and me too. He had nice words for the club and the city and I’m happy. I hope to prove that I’m up to it.

“I am calm, I want to learn and play and win. Hopefully Serie A is the ideal league for me. I want to enjoy this.”
