Ranocchia: ‘I’ll tell you the differences between Spalletti and Pioli’

Start

Former Inter and Azzurri defender Andrea Ranocchia recently explained his thoughts on the differences between Luciano Spalletti and Stefano Pioli. Ranocchia was managed by both Spalletti and Pioli during their time with the Nerazzurri but he last played for Monza before retiring due to an ankle injury. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, as reported by MilanPress, Ranocchia spoke about his memories of the two coaches, how they were in training and in the locker room.

What memories do you have?

“Due to a question of chronology and the duration of the professional relationship, I was able to bond less with the current Milan coach. Also because he arrived at Inter when I was already headed for the market. So much so that after a while I went on loan to Hull City in the Premier League. But I complimented him on the Scudetto and he wrote to me after I retired. Of course, we talk to Spalletti more often.”

Who asked for more in training?

“They both gave it their all. As soon as we arrived, Pioli almost threatened us, he said he didn’t know how we were preparing before, but that he would have physically “massacred” us. He was of his word. Both are almost obsessive in preparing for the match and studying the opponent. Perhaps Stefano is more methodical in the way he sets up his daily work, while with Luciano the menu varied a little more.”

Relations with the locker room

“They have more similar characters than it might seem. They are very direct and genuine. As a good Tuscan, Luciano is more of a host, inclined to joke. Charming the players as seen in the press conference.”
