Radja Nainggolan Released Under Conditions Amid Cocaine Trafficking Investigation

Start

Former Roma and Inter Milan midfielder Radja Nainggolan has been formally investigated for alleged involvement in a criminal organization as part of a cocaine trafficking probe. The Belgian footballer, who currently plays for Lokeren in Belgium’s second division, spent a night in custody before being released under specific conditions.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Nainggolan’s lawyers, Mounir and Omar Souidi, explained the situation: “He has been released with conditions, meaning he is under judicial supervision after being questioned by the investigating judge. This involves money he gave to people he wanted to help financially because he is a generous man. We now need to determine if these individuals used the money illegally. Perhaps he was naive.”

The Investigation and Arrest

The 36-year-old was arrested following an extensive police operation involving 30 searches across Antwerp and Brussels. Authorities seized €370,430 in cash, luxury items, 100 gold coins valued at €116,522, two bulletproof vests, firearms, 2.7 kilograms of cocaine, and 14 vehicles. The investigation centers on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America to Europe via Antwerp’s port and its redistribution within Belgium. Nainggolan is suspected of money laundering but has denied any involvement.

His lawyer emphasized his innocence: “A provisional release would be entirely justified. This is about money he lent in good faith. There is no evidence suggesting my client was involved or aware of any drug-related activities in this case.”

Conditions of Release

After undergoing two rounds of questioning, Nainggolan was released under conditions that include staying within Belgium’s borders and remaining available to the prosecutor’s office. He returned home after the interrogation to reassure his family and friends.

Nainggolan’s Defence

Omar Souidi defended his client’s character: “He is a footballer, not a criminal, and he has been deeply affected by all of this. He cooperated fully with the authorities during questioning. I expect him to return to playing for Lokeren soon.”

Nainggolan has not yet been formally charged but remains under investigation. His club, Lokeren, which signed him just a week ago, has not commented on whether he will immediately rejoin team activities.

Financial Struggles and Media Speculation

Belgian media have speculated about Nainggolan’s financial situation, suggesting he may have been in need of money recently. Reports claim that stories about his financial struggles have circulated within Antwerp’s criminal circles. However, Nainggolan has not addressed these allegations directly.

A Career Marked by Controversy

Nainggolan’s career has been as colorful off the pitch as it has been on it. Known for his fiery personality and extravagant lifestyle, he has faced disciplinary issues in the past. In 2018, while at Roma, he was fined and dropped from the squad after posting videos of himself drinking and smoking during a New Year’s Eve party. In 2022, while playing for Royal Antwerp, he was suspended after being photographed smoking an electronic cigarette on the bench.

Despite these controversies, Nainggolan remains a celebrated figure in football circles for his talent and contributions during his time at clubs like Roma and Inter Milan.

What’s Next?

As the investigation unfolds, questions remain about whether Lokeren will reintegrate Nainggolan into their squad immediately or wait for further developments. Meanwhile, authorities continue to pursue leads in what appears to be a significant drug trafficking operation involving multiple suspects.
