Prandelli: “Atalanta-Genoa will be the free-flowing football of Gasp and Gila”

Start

Former Atalanta and Genoa coach Cesare Prandelli shared his thoughts on the upcoming match between his two former clubs. Prandelli expressed his admiration for Atalanta’s performance in the Champions League in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, noting their ability to trouble any opponent with their quick transitions and intelligent use of space.

“Atalanta knows what to do and can trouble anyone with their ability to flip actions upon actions, always occupying spaces with the right timing,” Prandelli said. He praised the team’s conviction, solidity, and European-level personality, despite recent changes and injuries.

When asked about Atalanta’s struggles in Serie A compared to their European form, Prandelli explained, “In Italy, there’s a lot of tactical preparation. In Europe, Atalanta is freer to play better. But they do it in the league too.”

Prandelli likened Ademola Lookman to Antonio Di Natale, praising his development under Gasperini. “He’s never scored so many goals before. Gasp has completed him. He has endurance, devastating 30-40 meter counterattacks, and always aims for the goal,” he said.

Regarding Genoa’s current difficulties, Prandelli attributed them to the disruptive summer transfer market. He empathized with Gilardino’s situation, saying, “If everything happens at the end, it’s normal for the coach to get angry because it’s not just about replacing two players. All the team balances you were looking for change.”

Prandelli praised Gilardino’s approach, stating, “Gila is humble, studies, knows how to listen, and isn’t afraid to confront himself. But in the end, he’s himself, the only way to be credible, especially with your players.”

He drew a parallel between Gasperini and Gilardino in their coaching philosophies: “They’re similar in their desire not to take away freedom from their players. Ask Gudmundsson how happy he was playing freely last year. In this, they are two similar coaches: not a playing system at all costs, even with unsuitable players; rather, players improved by changing their role.”

Prandelli concluded by advising Genoa on how to approach the match against Atalanta: “Try to take away their spaces. And understand how to get out of their constant pressing. Verticalize immediately, even if it’s not the football Gila prefers.”
