Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini addressed the media ahead of the team’s UEFA Europa League match against Elfsborg, discussing several key topics including the recent coaching change and his relationship with the fans.
Regarding the dismissal of former coach Daniele De Rossi, Pellegrini expressed gratitude for De Rossi’s contributions: “First of all, I’d like to thank De Rossi for everything he transmitted to us. It was difficult, he gave us so much on a human level and on the field. For me, he is an exceptional coach, both humanly and professionally.” He emphasized that the team did not expect or desire the change, stating, “We didn’t expect his dismissal, the group wasn’t happy with the results but didn’t feel the need to change. We were sure the results would come.”
Pellegrini acknowledged the challenges of being Roma’s captain after legends like Totti and De Rossi: “I know the responsibilities of being captain after Totti and De Rossi, I’ve always taken on this responsibility because it has always been my dream.” He addressed the criticism he’s faced, saying, “It’s normal to be the first suspect when things don’t go well. When there was a need to take responsibility, I always did it.”
On his relationship with the fans, Pellegrini expressed hope for improvement: “I hope to recover the relationship with the fans, everyone knows what it means for me to wear this shirt and carry this armband. My love for Roma is unconditional.”
Looking ahead to the Elfsborg match, Pellegrini emphasized its importance: “Tomorrow is an important match, it’s part of a journey we’re making with the coach and his staff to bring back enthusiasm, after the first few days that didn’t go as we wanted.”
When asked about the possibility of giving up his captain’s armband during the crisis, Pellegrini responded firmly: “The armband? For me, it’s important when you don’t just wear it on Sundays, but every day. How? By helping teammates when they have difficulties, and I will never stop doing things for Roma and helping when I can.”
Pellegrini also praised young teammate Pisilli: “He’s a golden boy, incredibly humble. He trains well, pays attention to the smallest detail, and that’s fundamental. He’s strong, he’s modern, he knows how to play the ball, tackle, make runs, score goals, great quality.”
