Como have made a significant move to strengthen their backline by securing the services of Ivan Smolčić, a promising 24-year-old Croatian defender. The club has announced that Smolčić has joined from HNK Rijeka on a long-term contract that will keep him at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia until 2029.
Smolčić’s journey to Como began in his hometown with Gospić 91 before he made the move to HNK Rijeka’s youth setup in 2014. His professional debut came in April 2019, and since then, he has established himself as a crucial part of Rijeka’s defence. The young centre-back has also gained international experience, representing Croatia at the U21 level with two caps in 2022.
Head coach Cesc Fàbregas expressed his enthusiasm for the club’s latest acquisition, praising Smolčić’s defensive qualities and tactical understanding. Fàbregas highlighted the player’s positional awareness and experience in Croatian football as key attributes that will benefit Como 1907 as they look to solidify their defensive options.
Upon his arrival, Smolčić shared his excitement about joining Como 1907, citing the positive reputation of the coach, team, and the club’s recent promotion to Serie A as factors in his decision. The Croatian defender expressed confidence in his ability to compete at the Serie A level and pledged to contribute his best efforts to help the team achieve its objectives.
