Serie A side Bologna have officially completed the transfer of Swedish international full-back Emil Holm from Spezia. The 24-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Atalanta, but La Dea opted not to make his move permanent. A statement on Bologna’s official website confirmed the move:
Bologna FC 1909 announces the permanent acquisition of defender Emil Holm from Spezia Calcio.
Emil Holm, the eleventh Swedish player in the club’s history, is a 2000-born defender known for his excellent physical and athletic qualities. He began his football journey with Annebergs IF, located a few kilometers from Gothenburg. In the summer of 2012, he joined the youth academy of IFK Göteborg.
Holm made his first-team debut in 2018, quickly becoming an important member of the squad. In January 2021, he transferred to the Danish club Sønderjyske, and later, in August 2021, he was acquired by Spezia Calcio, which loaned him back to the Danish team for another season. He returned to Liguria the following season, making 20 appearances and scoring one goal.
The 2023-2024 season saw Holm on loan at Atalanta, where he recorded 22 appearances, one goal, and one assist, ultimately helping the Bergamo team qualify for the Europa League.
Internationally, Holm has represented Sweden at the youth level, with 7 appearances for the Under-19 team and 6 appearances (and 2 goals) for the Under-21 team. His performances earned him his first call-up to the senior national team in November 2022, where he has since made 8 appearances and scored one goal.
Holm is skilled in tackling and positioning, with good timing in challenges and aerial duels. His defensive abilities are complemented by a solid understanding of the game. Offensively, he excels in crossing from the right flank and dribbling, with secure ball control and precise passing.
Holm represents the prototype of the modern full-back: a defender capable of significantly contributing in both phases of play. His combination of technical, physical, and tactical skills makes him a complete and versatile player.
As of June 2024, he is officially part of Bologna FC on a permanent basis.
