Atalanta have officially announced the signing of Mateo Retegui from Genoa in a swift deal following the injury of Gianluca Scamacca. The Argentine-born forward, who represents Italy at the international level, has joined the Serie A club for a fee of €22 million, with an additional €3 million in potential add-ons. Retegui has signed a four-year contract with Atalanta, further strengthening their attacking options.
The move comes just three days after Scamacca suffered a torn ACL, prompting Atalanta to act quickly in the transfer market. Retegui, who had a challenging first season in Serie A with Genoa, scored seven goals and provided two assists in 29 appearances, despite being hampered by an ankle injury early in the campaign. His previous experience includes stints at Boca Juniors, Estudiantes, and Talleres, showcasing his potential as a valuable addition to Atalanta’s squad.
Retegui’s arrival is expected to provide the team with much-needed depth in the forward position, especially as they prepare for the upcoming season. Atalanta’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, is keen to integrate the striker into his plans, leveraging Retegui’s work ethic and intensity on the pitch.
