Sampdoria have officially announced the dismissal of Andrea Pirlo from his position as head coach after a challenging 14-month tenure in Serie B. The former Italy international leaves the club following a difficult start to the 2024-25 season, where Sampdoria managed to secure only one point from their first three matches, placing them near the bottom of the league standings.
A statement from club read:
“U.C. Sampdoria announces that Andrea Pirlo has been relieved of his position as head coach of the first team. The coach and the members of his staff – Roberto Baronio, Mauro Bertoni, Nicola Pavarini and Raffaele Clemente – must be thanked for the commitment and professionalism shown during his time at the club.”
The Blucerchiati’s season began with a draw against Frosinone, however, subsequent matches resulted in disappointing defeats, including a 1-0 loss to Reggiana and a 3-2 setback against Salernitana. Last season, Sampdoria also struggled, finishing seventh in the league with 55 points, 18 points behind Como, who occupied the automatic promotion spots.
Pirlo joined Sampdoria in June 2023, marking his third managerial role after previous stints at Juventus and Fatih Karagümrük in Turkey. Reports suggest that Andrea Sottil is the frontrunner to take over as head coach following Pirlo’s exit.
