Oaktree sets course for Inter Milan’s future transfer strategy

Start

Oaktree Capital, the new American owners of Inter Milan, have outlined their vision for the club’s upcoming transfer market strategy. While it may be too early to delve into specifics, Calciomercato report that the ownership has made it clear to the club’s management how they should operate in the summer when Inter will bid farewell to several players whose contracts are expiring.

The directive from Oaktree mirrors the approach taken last summer, emphasizing the acquisition of young players, preferably under 25 years old, with rare exceptions to be agreed upon. This marks a significant departure from many of the club’s recent transfers, which saw the arrivals of players like Acerbi, Mkhitaryan, Arnautovic, Darmian, Taremi, and Zielinski. Oaktree is demanding a focus on promising talents who can create value for the club, rather than players who represent only a cost.

In the search for a new defender, Inter Milan will adhere to these principles. The club is exploring options as they prepare for a new era, considering that both de Vrij and Acerbi are aging and their contracts expire in 2025. While Buongiorno was more than just a suggestion, that possibility has faded, and the club must look elsewhere.

However, looking elsewhere does not necessarily mean turning to Germany or Bayer Leverkusen, where Jonathan Tah currently plays. Although Inter knows and appreciates Tah, who will be a free agent in June, they are unlikely to offer him a contract. The preference, at least for now, is for a younger profile. While exceptions may be made, it appears that Inter’s management is not inclined to use their wildcard on the Leverkusen defender.
