Saturday’s Serie A Fixtures Will Be Postponed, According To The Italian Minister

Start

Saturday’s Serie A games will not go ahead owing to Pope Francis’ funeral.

That is according to Nello Musumeci, the Italian Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies. He insists the three fixtures due to be played will need to be rescheduled.

After the Pope’s passing on Easter Monday, four games were rearranged to be played on April 23, 2025. Now, it seems likely that Como vs Genoa, Inter vs Roma and Lazio vs Parma will need to be played at a later date.

Saturday’s games won’t go ahead,” Italian Minister Musumeci told reporters on Tuesday (via ANSA). At the time of writing, Serie A haven’t confirmed if this will definitely be the case.

Naturally, His Holiness’ passing will see a national period of mourning in Italy. Hence why Monday’s games were quickly cancelled and pencilled in for this Wednesday.

Pope Francis Funeral Set To See Further Serie A Games Postponed

Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025. After suffering with bronchitis, he passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday aged 88.

Inter’s fixture schedule is already extremely demanding owing to the Nerazzurri‘s quest for the treble. Simone Inzaghi’s side have five Serie A games to go as well as three semi-finals to play across two competitions.

The first is Wednesday’s second leg semi-final clash against Milan at the San Siro. Inzaghi’s men still have both ties against Barcelona to navigate in the UEFA Champions League as well.

If they are successful against both sides, another two games will be added to their schedule. However, there are available midweek slots to rearrange the Roma game as well as playing on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Claudio Ranieri’s side are currently sixth in the standings and have a realistic chance of making the top four this season. Genoa and Como are locked on 39 points each and a mid-table finish is likely for both sides.

Parma and Lazio also have plenty to play for. The former are fighting against relegation. On the other hand, Marco Baroni’s side are pushing hard to finish in the top six which will guarantee European soccer in 2025-26.
