Lazio and Roma fans have been banned from their next three away games in Serie A after violent clashes during Sunday’s Derby della Capitale.
Trouble flared outside of the Stadio Olimpico prior to the 1-1 draw between the fierce rivals. Alessio Romagnoli opened the scoring for the Biancocelesti after 47 minutes.
Claudio Ranieri’s side hit back when Matias Soule equalized midway through the second half. The result leaves both sides in with a chance of finishing in the top four this season.
However, the match itself didn’t generate the real talking points owing to the ugly scenes in the streets in and around Ponte Milvio. When supporters couldn’t attack each other, the police were targeted.
Ultras from both clubs hurled glass bottles and any other objects they could find at law enforcement officers. Such actions have now seen a strict banning order applied.
It’s very likely that the Rome derby will not be played late at night next season to avoid repeat occurrences. The local authorities do typically insist the fixture is played in the early afternoon.
What Games Will Lazio And Roma Fans Miss?
Lazio supporters will now be banned from attending the fixtures against Genoa, Empoli and Serie A leaders Inter. That has been fully confirmed by the Interior Sport Minister.
As for Roma fans, they will not be present for the games against Inter, Atalanta and Torino. With both sides in the running for a Champions League spot, it could have huge ramifications on their chances.
The Biancocelesti are currently one place and two points ahead of their city rivals. As it stands, Marco Baroni’s charges find themselves sixth in the standings.
Roma are seventh and are just outside the European soccer places. The pressure is really on both sets of players now to finish the season on a high.
