Bayern Need ‘Minor Miracle’ To Beat Inter In Champions League Says Legendary Ex-German Striker

Bayern Munich need a ‘minor miracle’ to turn their Champions League quarter-final tie against Inter around, says legendary ex-German striker Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Legendary ex-German striker Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, formerly of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, believes that the Serie A leaders are favourites to advance to the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

In last week’s first leg at the Allianz Arena, Simone Inzaghi’s side took a first-half lead through Argentine talisman Lautaro Martinez before Thomas Muller drew the hosts level with just five minutes left on the clock.

I Nerazzurri responded almost instantly with a wonderfully worked counter-attacking goal, with Davide Frattesi sweeping home the vital winner from Carlos Augusto’s cross to put his side back in control of the tie.

The pair meet at the San Siro for the second leg on Wednesday at 3pm ET, where Inter will be looking to take a huge step towards an unlikely historic treble.

Rummenigge: Inter ‘Favourites’ vs Bayern In Champions League

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Rummenigge said: “In my opinion, Bayern will need a minor miracle after the result of the first leg in Munich because Inter showed themselves as a great team against us, really.

“It will be a difficult match for Bayern, but not impossible. But for me, Inter will be the favourites to go through.”

The two-time World Cup runner-up continued, stating that the Bavarians should’ve settled for a draw after Muller’s equaliser in the first leg rather than pushing for a winner, as he believes that this is what led to Frattesi’s costly late winner.

“We lost the first leg a bit unnecessarily, because after Müller’s goal, it would have been smarter to go and be happy with the draw. Instead, we pushed on because we wanted to win at all costs and ended up conceding a goal that cost us massively.”

To make matters worse for Bayern, they are having to deal with numerous injury concerns heading into the tie, with Alphonso Davies, Hiroki Ito, Jamal Musiala, Manuel Neuer and Dayot Upamecano due to miss out.
