Cesc Fabregas has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Claudio Ranieri at AS Roma next season.
Ranieri came out of retirement in November but is set to step down once the 2024-25 campaign concludes. The legendary Italian boss has led the Lupi to 6th in the Serie A standings with four games remaining.
On Sunday, the 2015-16 English Premier League title winner oversaw a brilliant 1-0 win against Scudetto-chasing Inter Milan at the San Siro.
As it stands, Ranieri has managed 35 games and recorded an impressive 21 victories. The 73-year-old has only tasted defeat six times.
It’s the third time that Ranieri has come to Roma’s aid as a head coach. His first spell came between 2009-2011 where he finished as a runner-up in the Serie A the Coppa Italia and Supercopa Italiana.
In his second stint in the dugout, Ranieri only oversaw the final 12 games of the 2018-19 campaign. This season, he replaced Ivan Juric who left for Southampton.
Will Cesc Fabregas Be Roma’s Next Manager?
According to Sky Sport Italia, Roma has already made contact with Cesc Fabregas about moving to the Stadio Olimpico this summer.
On April 23, it was reported that Fabregas was set to remain at Como amid interest from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. The German club still remain keen on the Spaniard.
Earlier this month, Fabregas insisted he was committed to Como. He suggested no contact had been made from any potential suitors.
However, it appears that the Giallorossi have now touched base with Fabregas’s representatives. The position at the Stadio Olimpico will be hard to ignore if a European finish is acquired this year.
Fabregas starred as a player and has also done so in his short stint as a manager at the Stadio Comunale Sinigaglia. Since becoming the official head coach in July, the Biancoblù has secured Serie A safety.
The previous season, Fabregas helped Como win promotion from Serie B on the pitch. Others in contention for the Roma job include Patrick Vieira and Stefano Pioli.
