Milan’s Mayor Beppe Sala has provided an update on the ongoing discussions surrounding the new San Siro stadium project for Inter and AC Milan. Speaking to Italia Oggi, Sala outlined the current situation and the crucial timeline for the proposed shared facility.
Sala acknowledged his initial preference for renovating the existing stadium but recognized the clubs’ investment and vision for a new venue. He stated, “I have said many times that I would have preferred to renovate the current one. But it’s the football clubs that are investing and, if they pursue the design of a new stadium, in the end we can only highlight the importance of not disrupting the fans’ habit of going to San Siro and therefore finding a way to build it in the same area, in a location that is well-served.”
The mayor emphasized March as the decisive moment for the project. “The expression of interest from the clubs was an important step forward. The truth will come in March when they deliver the revised economic and financial plan to us. Once approved, if all goes well, we will start the procedures to transfer the old stadium and areas to the company,” Sala explained.
Regarding the valuation of the San Siro area, Sala revealed, “The Revenue Agency has estimated the value of the stadium and areas at 197 million euros. A weighted and indisputable assessment was needed. If the companies are interested and everything works out, they will pay that amount. We will use that money for the neighborhood and for the most vulnerable segments of society.”
