Monza manager Alessandro Nesta has responded to Paulo Fonseca’s recent comments and shared his thoughts on the challenges of modern defending ahead of Monza’s Serie A match against Lazio.
In his pre-match press conference, Nesta addressed various topics, including Monza’s recent performances, tactical approaches, and player availability. However, his most notable remarks came in response to Fonseca’s statement about the difficulty of facing Monza compared to Real Madrid.
Nesta expressed confusion over Fonseca’s comment, stating, “He found Real Madrid easier? I don’t understand, I think it’s purely a mental factor. We don’t always mark man-to-man, it’s not our philosophy.”
The former Italian defender also reflected on the challenges of defending in modern football, admitting, “I don’t teach anything because I wouldn’t be capable of defending in today’s game. This is my feeling, I’m not complaining, but I don’t think it’s right this way. Otherwise, Izzo shouldn’t be playing anymore.”
Regarding Monza’s recent form and upcoming match against Lazio, Nesta acknowledged the team’s difficult position in the league table but remained optimistic. “The table is what it is, and the points we’ve collected are those. It’s a shame because we probably deserved something more,” he said.
Nesta praised Lazio’s resilience, noting, “I think they’re a team that never gives up, that’s what their league path says, but they also demonstrated it against Porto.”
Looking ahead to the match, Nesta emphasized the need for a strong performance: “Lazio is a strong team from various points of view, we’ll have to play a tough game and bring home points. We need them. We must make good use of the anger that the last two games have left us.”
The manager also discussed tactical approaches and player availability, confirming that Petagna and Birindelli are in the squad, while D’Ambrosio and Ciurria are out.
