Nesta: ‘Fiorentina were in trouble but we gave up playing’

Following Monza’s 2-2 draw against Fiorentina, manager Alessandro Nesta expressed his disappointment in the post-match press conference. Despite taking a 2-0 lead, Monza failed to secure the victory, prompting Nesta to analyze his team’s performance critically.

“There’s a lot of regret,” Nesta began. “We were 2-0 up, but in the second half, we gave up playing. We had 3-4 interesting actions, but after the break, we just gave the ball to them. You can’t spend 45 minutes in your own area and hope to succeed. You can’t chase opponents the whole time. We needed a different second half.”

Nesta questioned his team’s mentality, stating, “I don’t know what it depended on, but we need to have more courage in keeping the ball and proposing play for longer periods. You can stay in your area for a few minutes, but fifty…”

The manager praised Daniel Maldini’s potential but emphasized the need for improvement in game management. “He doesn’t even know the potential he has. He has impressive skills but needs to improve in managing the game. If he finds the key, he has no limits.”

Addressing his visible frustration with player Kyriakopoulos during the match, Nesta explained, “His misfortune is that he was close to me… I want to win. There was an opportunity; we should have pressed Fiorentina when they were in difficulty. The fault is mine, not the players’, but if the opponent is wobbling, you have to kill them, speaking in football terms.”

Nesta also highlighted the need for improvement in set-piece defense and maintaining possession. “We’ve taken goals from two set pieces, and we need to hold the ball better. But my guys are great; they care, and if they get into trouble, it’s up to me to propose things that get them out of trouble.”
