Napoli’s star striker, Victor Osimhen, continues to be a source of concern for the club as doubts loom over his fitness ahead of the crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona. Osimhen, who returned from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) last week, has yet to fully integrate back into the squad, sparking speculation and tension within the Napoli camp.
The Nigerian international has been absent from club duties since departing for AFCON in late December, where he represented his country and contributed to Nigeria’s journey to the tournament final. However, upon his return to Naples, Osimhen’s readiness for action has come under scrutiny.
Reports emerged following Napoli’s recent 1-1 draw with Genoa that Osimhen had requested to be omitted from the matchday squad. While initial speculation suggested this could have been a tactical decision, Walter Mazzarri, Napoli’s coach, hinted at deeper concerns over Osimhen’s fitness.
In an interview with DAZN, Mazzarri expressed uncertainty regarding Osimhen’s availability for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Barcelona. “We can only hope he can be ready, but his presence is not certain,” stated Mazzarri. “According to him and the medical staff, he’s nowhere near fully fit, he has some muscular issues.”
Mazzarri’s remarks cast doubt on Osimhen’s immediate prospects, indicating that the striker may not feature against Barcelona as initially hoped. With Napoli’s Champions League aspirations hanging in the balance, Osimhen’s absence would be keenly felt.
Criticism has also been directed at Napoli’s handling of Osimhen’s return from AFCON. Journalist Paolo Condò, speaking on Sky Sport Italia, questioned the club’s decision not to provide Osimhen with a private jet for his return to Italy, potentially impacting his recovery and readiness for upcoming fixtures.
