Bayern Munich captain Thomas Muller says he and his teammates are not happy with the 1-0 loss to Lazio and expects a ‘defensive’ performance from them in the second-leg. A Ciro Immobile penalty decided the first-leg after Dayot Upemacano was sent off for a reckless tackle, leaving Sarri’s team with a man advantage to see out the match. Speaking in the post-game, Muller shared his thoughts on the performance and his disappointment with the result:
“No, it didn’t go like in Leverkusen, it was a completely different game. We are not happy with the result, especially the second half, which we gifted to our opponents with our mistakes. In the first half, we should have scored for sure, we had good chances against a good team that knows how to defend like Lazio. But if you don’t score… In a situation like ours, confidence is continually decreasing: since the beginning of the season, we always have the same problems. Lazio wasted a great opportunity playing 11 against 10 for half an hour, it was probably a mistake for them: they wanted to defend the result. We stand with Tuchel, but he is right that we didn’t do well in the second half. In the first, we hit the post, had excellent shots even from 6 meters… those are enough opportunities for one half.”
Muller then spoke to Prime Video: “In the return leg, I expect Lazio to play a very defensive game. Everyone knows the Italian way of defending. I believe they will play to defend and counter, perhaps hoping for another mistake from us. We have to prepare for that game as best as we can, but now we have to think about the Bundesliga, where we are in a bad position. But I am still confident, Lazio only has a one-goal advantage. Things in football change quickly.”
