Mourinho: ‘The referee looked Spanish…’

Start

Roma coach Jose Mourinho cast doubt over his future at the club following their defeat in the Europa League final: “I can’t objectively say I’m staying.” The Giallorossi took the lead through Paulo Dybala but were pegged back by Gianluca Mancini own goal before losing the match on penalties. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia after the final whistle, the Portuguese coach gave his own unique assessment of the game and reflected on his future in Rome:

“The group gave everything. Either we came out with the cup or we came out dead. We were dead physically and mentally. The result is unfair, with so many incidents to talk about. We were tired, we can lose a game of football, I have won five European finals and lost this one but I have never gone home so proud.”

Dybala’s tears?

“Everyone is attached to the jersey, we take things seriously and humbly, always giving everything. Everyone reacts differently, one cries, another doesn’t. But the truth is that we are all so sad. We arrive home dead tired and saying this is unfair.”

An intense game…

“The referee looked Spanish, we gave everything. So many yellows, but Lamela should have taken the second yellow, he didn’t and then he scored one of the penalties.”

The good news might be about your future.

“Monday I go on vacation, if we have time to talk before Monday we will decide, if not we will do it after. I have to fight for these guys, I can’t objectively say I’m staying.”

Will you talk with the club to plan for the future?

“I am a serious man. I told the ownership that as soon as any club contacted me they would be the first to know. In December I spoke with the club because I had the situation related to the Portugal national team. Since then I have not spoken to them again because there has been no more contact. I still have a year left on my contract with Roma, that’s the situation.”
