José Mourinho could allegedly be nearing an exit from Roma.
According to La Repubblica, Mourinho’s future at the capital will be decided in the coming weeks. His three-year contract at the club expires in June 2024.
With such reports, random links were thrown into the rumour mix, with Inter, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid all suggested to be parties interested in the legendary Portuguese manager. Matteo Pinci, who penned the original article, did, however, highlight that an exit is by no means on the immediate horizon nor is it likely. It is merely a discussion point to be ironed out by the Friedkins – the majority owners of Roma – soon, with whom Mourinho shares a “less than idyllic relationship.”
Inter’s board of directors are also set to discuss Simone Inzaghi’s future with the club becoming frustrated at the “ups and downs” of this season.
According to the report, relayed by TuttoMercatoWeb, Mourinho admires Luís Campos (PSG Football Advisor/Sporting Director) and Florentino Pérez (Madrid President). During Mourinho’s spell at Manchester United he refused the club’s proposal to appoint a Director of Football. He does, however, share an affinity with Campos – Mourinho enlisted his countryman as a scout and tactical analyst when he was manager at Madrid.
Chelsea are also rumoured to be monitoring their former manager’s situation with Todd Boehly eager to maintain the stir he has caused in Europe and Graham Potter being unable to inspire his team into consistent winning form.
Roma have won five out of eight Serie A fixtures since the domestic season resumed following the Qatar World Cup break. Mourinho’s side sit in third place level on points with Milan and three points behind second-place Inter. They next face Salzburg on Thursday evening in the second-leg of the Europa League group stage play-off with a 1-0 disadvantage.
