Roma manager Jose Mourinho was disappointed at his teams defeat to RB Salzburg in the Europa League, calling it “an utterly undeserved defeat.” The Giallorossi had chances of their own but failed to convert them, losing to a late Nicolás Capaldo goal in the 84th minute. Mourinho spoke with Roma TV and Sky Sport Italia and reflected on a frustrating evening that saw him lose the match and forward Paulo Dybala to injury:
“An utterly undeserved defeat, but to win you have to score goals and we didn’t. We played very well as a team, the boys gave everything, we were the best team on the pitch.
“We go again on Thursday night, keeping in mind that they’re up by one goal.
“However, I can’t think about the return leg yet. First we have to think about Verona. With our limited roster and the fatigue setting in, it’s difficult for us to think about next Thursday. It’s already difficult to focus on Sunday.
“That’s football, I think we dominated the game. We were always in control of a very calm game for us.
“We missed some very easy chances tonight. And mind you, there is a clear penalty for us in the first half. We were unlucky. Conceding goals in the last minutes is unfair.”
“We’re getting better, but if you don’t put the ball into the back of the net there is always the risk of losing. We know who we are, we know our limits. You won’t hear me say anything bad when the team gives everything on the pitch. That’s the case tonight.
“Dybala? I really don’t know. At half-time he told he couldn’t play anymore. I don’t know whether it was an injury or simple precaution.”
